A VIEW TO A MEAL

Art and food are as good as you make them

Potlucks, typically, are cheesy social gatherings—the good food usually runs out in seconds, the burnt casserole is left cold, and everyone keeps eyeing their watches. But ad and editorial photographer Casey Kelbaugh made big improvements to these boring get-togethers in 2000 when he created Slideluck Potshow, a dinner and art event that features not only gourmet-style food but also innovative art (presented in five-minute slide shows) by photojournalists, painters, and designers. This unique forum, which comes with a different theme each time, has taken place throughout the U.S. and Mexico City, with three yearly events in New York. Tonight, the theme is “change”—in other words, perk up that casserole by throwing it out! Kelbaugh suggests bringing something in the more delicious realm of, say, watermelon-and-mint salad, grilled tilapia, and peanut-butter cookies. Yum.
