BACK IN THE SADDLE

The Galapagos Art Space finally opens its new home

After more than a decade in Williamsburg, Galapagos Art Space, which can no longer afford to stay in its prime North 6th Street location (the club’s rent went up by $10,000 a month at the end of 2005, and it faces a 30 percent rent increase in November), is moving to a new home in DUMBO—one that promises to better nurture its original mission as a home for artists. Right around the corner from St. Ann’s Warehouse, the New Galapagos Art Space features grander décor (it’s a two-story building, with mezzanine, reflecting pool, and larger stage) and a program of more art-centric events—and less of the club-style parties they were forced to have in Williamsburg in order to keep up with the costs. Welcome Wagon is the kick-off event, hosted by Mother Flawless Sabrina and Kim Cea, featuring a gaggle of burlesque and performance-art talent including Lady Rizo, Julian Fleischer, La JohnJoseph, Jack Ferver, Miss Lez Glenn Marla, and Daisy Spurs.
