Return to the art world’s golden era of wealth and decadence when, as counterculture critic Steven Hager puts it, "underground ideas became marketable commodities," at Paul Kasmin Gallery’s Totally Rad: New York in the ’80s, an exhibit of sculptures, paintings, and works on paper that represent the zeitgeist through the works of Julian Schnabel, Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Annette Lemieux, Kenny Scharf, and Keith Haring, to name a few. Highlights of the show include Frank Stella’s bold, bright colors and dizzying, layered shapes in Talladega(1980)—a drastic departure from his original dark canvases of the ’50s; Basquiat’s Untitled (Car) (1987); and—because what show on the ’80s would be complete without him?—Andy Warhol’s Beatle Boots (negative) (1986).
