The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari

(Robert Wiene, 1919). One of the most inspired horror movies ever made, and a key work in the history of film design, Wiene's expressionist masterpiece, the first significant screen example of the style, concerns a side-show hypnotist who uses a somnambulist to carry out his crimes. The picture has been analyzed to death as a manifestation of the collective German psyche of the period, but you can ignore that and just sit back and enjoy the great sets and the indelible performance of Conrad Veidt as the sleepwalking killer.
