(George Miller, 1981). Miller's Australian sci-fi epic was originally called Mad Max 2, and it turned out to be the rare sequel that outstripped the original (the 1979 Mad Max) in every way. Mel Gibson is a futuristic version of the solitary Western gunslinger, who after urban society has been wiped out in global conflict, gets involved in a whizzbang demolition derby with the bad guys. The stunt team does wonders; the pic was deservedly a huge hit.
