LA DOLCE VITA

Fellini, linguine, and musica

Federico Fellini didn’t intend 8 1/2, his greatest film (and overall top film in general—a directors’ poll taken by the British Film Institute ranked it the No. 3 movie of all time), to be so blatantly about himself. The 1963 film, which famously details Fellini’s own artistic struggles, was originally intended to be about a novelist suffering from writer’s block. But when Fellini discovered that his star, Marcello Mastroianni (whom the Italian director often used as his surrogate), had just played a writer in Antonioni’s La Notte, the protagonist was transformed into a filmmaker. Tonight, celebrate Fellini’s masterpiece about love and fantasy in style at Socrates Sculpture Park with an Italian-inspired program that includes Italian classic pop and folk by the five-piece band La Nozze di Carlo and Italian cuisine from Manetta’s.
