Onibaba

(Kaneto Shindo, 1964). Hayashi Hikaru's experimental score creates a sensual atmosphere for this spooky tale set during the medieval civil wars concerning an elderly woman and her daughter-in-law who survive by murdering fleeing samurai and selling their armor. A stunningly beautiful movie, photographed with consummate mastery, it was the first Japanese picture with horrific elements to achieve wide distribution in the West.
