TWICE IN A LIFETIME

Absentee Boredoms arrange an encore

Does the fact that I’m bitterly disappointed this event is occurring make me a bad sport? Last year’s 77BoaDrum—as performed by Osaka, Japan’s Boredoms in DUMBO’s Empire–Fulton Ferry State Park—was billed as a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence: 77 minutes, 77 drummers, on 07/07/07. That ungodly but sublime racket, on one of the truly beautiful evenings of last summer, could’ve been the Shot Heard ’Round the World for a generation of dissolute Brooklyn youth. Instead, Nike-sponsorship dollars have prompted an encore, 88BoaDrum, to take place simultaneously in New York and L.A. The Boredoms, erstwhile noise-punk veterans, again wrote the score, but this year the trio is headed to the Tar Pits. Somehow, 11 extra drummers doesn’t seem like just compensation for the Lollapalooza-ing of what should’ve been something unique. Locals Gang Gang Dance conduct; somebody you know plays drums. I hope it fucking rains.
