GOLDEN TICKET

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

Goody, goody Gobstoppers! Summer at Hudson River Park couldn’t get any sweeter with the screening of the 1971 classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, starring the incomparable Gene Wilder as the notorious chocolatier who, after years of seclusion, suddenly reappears by holding an international contest that allows five lucky children to tour his mysterious factory and learn its sugar-making secrets. Unlike the recent Tim Burton version (which was named after Roald Dahl’s 1964 book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), the original is exceptional for the “pure imagination” of the filmmakers in a pre-CG era, Wilder’s impeccable comic timing, and the wonderfully bad choreography of 11 orange-skinned little men to the old-school Oompa Loompa song.
