(Lindsay Anderson, 1968). Lindsay Anderson's self-consciously ambivalent paean to class oppression and youthful high spirits at an English public school had the great good fortune to materialize late in the Year of the Barricades. If the youth revolt seems a bit abstract so is the movie, which is filled with solemnly surrealistic interpolations. Originally mistaken for a Maoist cell, the school's alienated clique today seems more a premonition of the Columbine killers—something Stanley Kubrick seems to have intuited when he cast suddenly hot Malcolm McDowell as the futuristic J.D. in A Clockwork Orange.
