Most would agree that music is something to be heard, not seen, but MOMA’s new exhibition, Looking at Music, promises otherwise. Featuring early media works by Nam June Paik, Bruce Nauman, Steve Reich, Joan Jonas, Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, and David Bowie, the show is an exploration of the fascinating connections that occurred among music, video, installation, and “mixed-media” art from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. Accompanying the exhibit are music videos from David Bowie, Devo, the Beatles, and Captain Beefheart; drawings, prints, and photographs by John Cage and Jack Smith, among others; and a film program.
