THE ORIGIN OF LOVE

Hedwig turns 10

A couple years ago, at a Hedwig & the Angry Inch tribute concert at Don Hill’s, a packed house of barely legal gay boys looked up with tearful adoration at John Cameron Mitchell as he sang some of his now-legendary drag character’s anthems. How many of them grew up listening to “Wicked Little Town” while dreaming of getting the hell out of Kansas? It’s been 10 years since the Off-Broadway musical began its run, and multitudes of New York’s latest generation of fags and queens who’ve been inspired by the show—the story of an East German transsexual rocker’s unrequited love—are expected to turn out for the 10th Anniversary of Hedwig & the Angry Inch tribute concert. Jonathan Whitton will be stepping into the title role; other performers include Theo & the Skyscrapers, Kissy Kamikaze, and DJ Michael T.
