Bergman brings on the laughs

As part of its Ingmar Bergman series “Film Is the Great Adventure,” the IFC Center presents the Swedish director’s tragicomic masterpiece Smiles of a Summer Night (1955). Starring Gunnar Björnstrand, Eva Dahlbeck, Ulla Jacobsson, and Harriet Andersson, the story follows four couples from different social classes who end up meeting for a weekend getaway in the country. Full of witty and flirtatious dialogue and love trysts broken and formed, the film ingeniously explores the nature of women and men and the games they play with each other in mistaking lust for love. Although “the solemn Swede” is best known for his later serious films like The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, this lighthearted flick was the first to catapult him into international stardom.
