Sometime collaborators Lou Reedand John Zorn have gotten together to break in a new West Village club. (Le) Poisson Rouge, which stands on the site of the old Village Gate, has had pretty immaculate bookings so far—Nico Muhly, Damon & Naomi, Bill Frisell—and it’s yet to really open; this early September date is something of an official inauguration. Saxophone polymath John Zorn, who presided over the demise of Tonic and the recent rise of Avenue C’s The Stone, knows a thing or two about the ephemeral nature of venues for experimental music in NYC; his partner this evening, Lou Reed, may know even more, having performed in ’em for over 40 years. Both know a good thing when they see it, which is why they’re here. Zeena Perkins and Ikue Mori’s Phantom Orchard open; Zorn’s back on September 4 with Bill Laswell and Milford Graves.
