Leave it to a guy from the Midwest to focus his life’s work on the American Dream. But don’t expect any white-picket fences when MOMA presents Chris Smith: An American Original, a retrospective on the work of the Wisconsin-born filmmaker. From his first film, American Job, about the disillusionment of a young man trying to get by on minimum wage, to American Movie, a mockumentary about a relentless Midwestern filmmaker who tries to raise enough money to make a horror flick, Smith captures the twisted side of American life while bringing empathy and a sense of humor to his subjects. Also featured in the weekend-long series is Home Movie, a documentary centered on eccentric Americans and their highly curious habitats, and The Yes Men, a look into the anti-corporate shenanigans of two hilarious WTO impersonators. For a finale, his latest feature, The Pool, a fictional story about a young Indian boy and his obsession with an unused pool and its owners, will be given a special preview screening on September 1.
