Among the loftiest of Trinidadian inventions—alongside the steel pan, the bake-and-shark sandwich, and the Naipaul novel—is the breakfast party: an all-inclusive bash that runs from dawn to midday, when stuffed, sunstruck revelers stumble home glutted and glad. This Labor Day weekend, in honor of the West Indian Day Parade (happening September 1), promoters responsible for the crown jewel of Trinidad’s annual carnival season—D’Original Vale Breakfast Party—work their magic on America, transforming the Brooklyn Public Library into a bacchanalian blowout. The hours have been adjusted for New York party schedules—the fete starts at 9 p.m. and runs till, well, whenever the books get soaked in rum—but everything else is pure Port of Spain: free Trini food, gallons of Angosturra and Johnny Walker Black, and high-voltage soca music, spun by top sound systems from Trinidad, New York, and Toronto. Reading glasses optional.
