And the Beat Goes On

The Howl Festival is back

Tompkins Square Park goes Ginsberg again with the fifth annual Howl Festival, a three-day cultural smorgasbord of poetry, music, theater, painting, dance, and food. Opening things up is the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Festival, wherein distinguished word-meisters from all over town gather to read the famous poet-visionary’s “Howl.” Then stick around for Mistress Formika’s soiree, along with an art auction to be held at the Bowery Poetry Club. Other festival highlights include the Cockettes (paired with San Fran’s Thrillpeddlers), and Chi Chi Valenti and Johnny Dynell’s “Howlucination ’08: Lowlife City,” a bawdy theatrical showcase filled with all your favorite burlesque, drag, and sundry performers, including the likes of Debbie Harry, Joey Arias and Basil Twist, the World Famous *BOB*, Dirty Martini, Johnny Porkpie, and Nasty Canasta. So don’t just stand there waiting to be run down by the drunken taxicabs of Absolute Reality . . .
Fri., Sept. 5, 5 p.m., 2008
