Do you dig late-period Byrds? This Negress does, and so, when L.A.s Beachwood Sparks emerged wide circa 1999, their fusion of psych, folk, and bluegrass seemed decades out of phaseand also delightful. Since they dropped 2001s Once We Were Trees, seems they shouldve been called Sonic Nostradamus, as myriad groups have surfaced from the New York murk to play with an acid-twang palette and strut around Williamsburg in beards and artfully moth-eaten plaid shirts. Yet theres still some culture that SoCal excels at, and what Beachwood Sparks inhaled and internalized up and around them canyons can still deliver. Bring yer Autry boots and a pocket full of stars. With the Willowz and Sera Cahoone.
