The winners of nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather, Part II(1974) screen for three weeks at Film Forum in honor of their newly restored 35mm prints. To refresh your memory, the iconic saga begins in 1945 with Marlon Brando as the aging Don Vito Corleone (a/k/a the Godfather, a/k/a the Ultimate Badass Mafioso), whose refusal to sanction narcotics trafficking sets off a mob war that nearly kills him, and who later hands control of the family over to the most unlikely candidate—his reluctant war-hero son, Michael (Al Pacino). Part II offers greater insight and depth by contrasting the dramatic events of Michael’s reign with the humble beginnings of Vito Corleone (played here by Robert DeNiro) and his rise to power. All we can say is: Maron’, good thing no one decided to restore Part III.
