It’s not easy to be the first at anything in a city of 8 million. But for the next four days, you really can be when Prelude ’08, kicking off tonight, gives theatergoers a sneak peek at what’s happening in the downtown theater scene this season. The fifth annual mini-festival and symposium features the best local theater and performance art by more than 20 participants, including Banana Bag and Bodice, Neal Medlyn, Sheila Callaghan, Richard Foreman, Okwui Okpokwasili, and Joyce Cho. Tonight at 7 p.m., catch the panel “Between White Cubes and Black Boxes: Performance, Place, and Context,” and then, at 8 p.m., do some performing of your own with Caden Manson’s Big Art Group at Chorus Karaoke, 25 West 32nd Street.
