One block where the arts still rule
For all of the East Village’s glass towers and gentrification run rampant, one block of 4th Street remains fabulous, at least for artists and those who adore them. With 12 theaters—including La MaMa E.T.C., WOW Café Theatre, and New York Theatre Workshop—eight dance studios, and three film-editing suites, East 4th between Bowery and Second Avenue is always teeming with coffee-sipping literary smarties, toned dancers’ bods, stagehands in all black, and actors on smoke breaks. And that’s the landscape we’re expecting at the FAB! Festival, Fourth Arts Block’s annual street party. The many cultural institutions residing here and in the area will be promoting their work on both stage and screen, while local vendors sell their wares. (Thankfully, that does not include condos.)
