Murder in Harlem

(Oscar Micheaux, 1935). A black security guard is framed for the murder of a young girl. Also known as Lem Hawkins’ Confession, this is Oscar Micheaux’s take on the Leo Frank case—or one of them. (He made his first in 1921 and adapted this from one of his novels.) The style is pure Micheaux and to make sure you don’t forget it, the hero “Henry Glory” is an obvious surrogate for the director.
