SHORT AND SWEET

The mother of short-film festivals comes to NYC

When Aussie director John Polson (Hide and Seek, Swimfan) was starting out 15 years ago, he realized the easiest way to get his short film seen would be to create his own film festival. Called Tropfest, it has since become Australia’s biggest short-film festival and is now a much-anticipated event of the annual Tribeca Film Festival for its concert feel (with DJs spinning and musical acts playing before the screenings) and A-list judges that, in the past, have included Russell Crowe and Ewan McGregor. All of the films presented are made specifically for this festival, and to ensure this, directors must include a Tropfest signature item in their piece (this year’s item is a sunflower). Judges Julianne Moore, Billy Crudup, Malcolm Gladwell (author of The Tipping Point), Christine Vachon (producer of Far From Heaven), and Bruna Papandrea (producer of Milk) lend their expertise to choose the best film of the night.
