What's in a name?

You can't judge a book by its cover, and you certainly can't judge an avant-garde film by its title. Let's look, for instance, at Bruce Connor. The avant-garde pioneer, who passed away this year, is best known for his 1958 film, A Movie. Like most of his work, the film consists of found footage (news reels, porn) assembled into an emotional reflection on violence. Where Connor went for succinct, Guy Debord went for quite the opposite: His 1978 film, In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni, however, is similarly assembled from images found in pop culture (magazines, comics) as a critique on an increasingly media-driven society. Both films are screened this weekend as part of Views From the Avant-Garde. In addition to a program of Connor's work and the 30th-anniversary screening of Debord's movie, new films and videos by up-and-coming avant-gardists will also be presented.
