Wire rock your face off

The terse English post-punk legends in Wire went unexpectedly poppy on this year's Object 47, which bassist Graham Lewis told me a few months ago reflected the band's attempt to go in an "airy and more expansive" direction. Lacquered with gauzy guitars and a maddeningly catchy vocal hook from singer-guitarist Colin Newman, "One of Us," the album's high point, could even pass for something out of the New Order vault. Expect to hear it tonight, but don't be fooled into thinking Wire have gone soft; they'll still rock your face off. Noise-garage openers Times New Viking, from Columbus, Ohio, use distortion as an instrument. This show is the final installment of WFMU's 50th-anniversary Free Music Series.
