German playwright Georg Büchner's fractured drama Woyzeck, which was unfinished at the time of his untimely death at 23, has inspired numerous interpretations over the years--you may recall Tom Waits's terrifically acidic score for Robert Wilson's production at BAM in 2002. Now Woyzeck returns to BAM for another rocked-out revival--this time with music by Nick Cave and fellow Bad Seed Warren Ellis--to tell the tale of a soldier haunted by bad dreams and driven by paranoia to murder his mistress. This production by Iceland's Vesturport Theatre, staged by director, actor, and former gymnast Gísli Örn Gardarsson, is a high-energy physical-theater spectacle featuring acrobatics, aerial ballets, and underwater sequences in Plexiglas tanks to bring Woyzeck's disturbing nightmares to life. It's already received rave reviews in London.
Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: Oct. 15. Continues through Oct. 18, 2008
