A smorgasbord of fresh farm foods for the fall

When you hear the name Gowanus Harvest Festival, your first reaction may be "No, thanks!" as you imagine what's been harvested from the smelly waterway (three-eyed fish, cans of scum, maybe the odd severed head from the days when the canal was a mob burial ground). But fear not: The folks hosting the second year of this annual event--which attracted more than a thousand attendees last year--have imported fresh farm foods from local vendors like Red Jacket Orchards, Saxelby Cheesemonger, and Hot Bread Kitchen. Don't miss the pony rides (only for children, we think), pumpkin carving, pie bake-off, canning demonstrations, and live music by Polkafinger, the Loom, and Van Hayride, among others. Harvest bonus: As a prelude to the festival, the Big Brooklyn Pig Roast and Harvest Hoedown takes place on Friday at 6 p.m., where they'll be slow-cooking a 200-pound Berkshire hog ($32–$40, children under 10 free).
