BICYCLE! BICYCLE!

Think you got what it takes to take on the Bronx?

The 14th Annual Tour de Bronx is more than New York's largest free cycling event. It's that one event that gathers just about every person with two wheels in town and gives them the chance to explore one of the less visited boroughs. And, let's face it: As the colder weather approaches, taking the bike out for a ride soon won't be an option. The course offers two routes: The 25-mile ride is a leisurely ride at about 11 miles per hour on flat, open stretches that goes through historic districts like the Bronx Greenway bike paths and the Bronx Shoreline; the 40-mile stretch is obviously for more experienced cyclists who feel comfortable riding in traffic at about 15 miles per hour, venturing toward City Island, SUNY Maritime College, and Co-op City. There are various starting locations; visit the Tour de Bronx site to find out which route is best for you. Pre-registration required, either by fax at 718-590-5814 or phone at 718-590-3518; online registration ends October 16. Rain day is October 26.
