Touki Bouki

(Djibril Diop Mambety, 1968). Dreams and fantasies have the same weight as reality in Djibril Diop Mambety’s cult film in which an outlaw Senegalese couple attempt to leave for France. Everything takes place in the realm of the wish. Cerebral and understated, Touki Bouki has a fragmented narrative, an abundance of semi-documentary vignettes, and echoes of Pierrot le Fou, another fanciful tale of mad love in the noonday sun.
