When you're living in middle America and barely have a job, what can you do to escape? OK, a titty bar is one answer. But Keven McAlester's new documentary, The Dungeon Masters, concerns three individuals who find refuge in the fantasy world of Dungeons and Dragons. Not just about the extreme dork factor of role-playing gamers, the film also explores the troubles that each character is evading: Elizabeth, who likes to dress as a dark elf, is getting over a divorce; Richard, a nudist obsessed with killing make-believe characters, wants to reconnect with his estranged stepson; and Scott, a failed novelist with an offbeat sense of humor, is struggling to support his wife and child. Two more reasons to go: killer cinematography by frequent Richard Linklater collaborator Lee Daniel and a haunting score by Blonde Redhead. A Q&A with the director follows the screening, a part of IFC's "Stranger Than Fiction" series.
