(Nagisa Oshima, 1986). Nagisa Oshima’s rarely screened film maudit is a sophisticated comedy of manners in which Charlotte Rampling falls madly in love with a jabbering chimpanzee. (Both performances are fabulous.) The movie was written by one Bunuel associate and produced by another. Relentlessly one-joke, it engages everything from King Kong and Bedtime for Bonzo to E.T. and Oshima’s own In the Realm of the Senses.
