Alejandro Escovedo is like no other

He may share his name with other cult icons (his niece, Prince sidewoman Sheila E.) and his manager with the Boss (Jon Landau), but punk vet turned roots rocker Alejandro Escovedo is definitely in a class of his own, sound-wise. It's not so much his fusion of hardscrabble lyrics with elements of chamber pop that's so unique, but the weight of what Escovedo's survived and the aesthetic eclecticism derived from being the spawn of the immigrant experience that makes his voice so distinctive. This year's Tony Visconti–produced Real Animal has been drawing raves everywhere and may widen his circle at last. I say let him go on and on with his fine-ass self! With Amy Cook.
