Tired of scripted “reality”-based television shows like Survivor and Amazing Race? For the past 32 years, the Margaret Mead Film and Video Festival has been a perfect outlet of real-life storytelling, exhibiting insightful documentaries that expose actual dramas and cultures around the world. Some of the exceptional stories being told this year include Body of War, a film about Tomas Young, a Kansas City native who was deployed to Iraq soon after 9/11; Gandhi’s Children examines a group of 181 boys who are rescued from a child-labor factory; and River of No Return, which tells the story of Frances Djulibing, a 42-year-old grandmother from a remote part of Northern Australia, who still envisions becoming an actress like her idol, Marilyn Monroe.
