(Tuevo Tulio, 1944). The Finnish directors most supreme melodrama details the chain of events that led a fresh-faced country girl to the Helsinki of depravitybetrayed by a series of duplicitous men, including a Nazi (or Soviet) spy. With its absurdly escalating melodramatic twists, this Job-like saga could be easily played for irony. Tulio, however, opts for unrelenting intensity and, since the ending is known from the onset, the systematic obliteration of false hope.
