Before 2005, New Orleans was best known for things like beignets, jambalaya, bananas foster, and the Hurricane (the drink, not the storm). Yummy, but nothing to hang on your wall. Katrina's definitely eclipsed our collective knowledge about the Crescent City, but if anything good is to come of that, it's the proliferation of art that's followed the destruction. Get a glimpse at NoLA Rising, a festival founded by New Orleans street artist Mike Dingler and hosted by NYC-based art collective SLIGHTLYaskew. Dingler's taken a tongue-in-cheek approach to commemorating Katrina: After the destruction, he held painting parties in New York to raise awareness; some of his collaborations with artists and the public will be on display at the main exhibit this week, A Tag of Two Cities. Check it out at tonight's opening, which also features live music, spoken word, and a T-shirt-painting competition. At tomorrow's benefit party Wet!, storm gear (slickers and galoshes) are the suggested attire.
