BLACK IS THE NEW BLACK

Redefining African-American identity

When you hear the term "blacklist," scenes from the McCarthy Era likely come to mind. But being on the black list is actually an honor over at the Brooklyn Museum, which is presenting The Black List Project: Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and Elvis Mitchell, a photo/documentary film exhibition that explores how 25 prominent African-Americans define being black in America. The project, photographed and filmed by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and moderated by film critic Elvis Mitchell, was turned into an HBO documentary and features the likes of Chris Rock, Russell Simmons, Serena Williams, Toni Morrison, Colin Powell, and Slash. The large-scale portraits coupled with the looping HBO film on three flat-screens should prove to be powerful portraits. Too bad the new President wasn't in on this.
