Cross of Love

(Teuvo Tulio, 1946). Loosely based on Pushkin’s “The Station-Master,” Teuvo Tulio’s most popular melodrama is total madness, even by his standards. A lighthouse keeper's daughter who is seduced, abandoned, and socially rejected, is indelibly played by Tulio’s companion, the natural beauty and relentless over-dramatizer Regina Linnanheimo, described by one Finnish film historian as a star “who eventually abandoned all acting ‘norms’” and whose “depictions of hysteria, panic, fear, and madness [were] a grand statement even on the scale of world melodrama.”
