I was raised to loathe the Beach Boys and all they stood for—presumably an endless summer America begotten by Manifest Destiny. Meanwhile, there was no fun, fun, fun in the sun for the folks that I descended from. Then, inevitably, when Brian Wilson began to re-emerge from his troubles and tour behind his reissued masterpiece, Pet Sounds, with the Wondermints, I fell in love to that LP. It was a wonder to have "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Caroline, No" reframed by a foreigner's delight in precious Americana. And similar pleasure awaits those who venture uptown now to catch Wilson deploy his new California ode, That Lucky Old Sun, which features Southern gentleman Van Dyke Parks (famed for the once-lost Smile). Fittingly, though, as Americans look forward to a new dawning of hope in the land and 66-year-old Wilson resurrects his Muse, the likes of "Surfin' USA" will still appear in the set to keep the thaw in our sore hearts lively.
