The Lineup

(Don Siegel, 1958). One of Siegel's tightest, most effective pictures, this concerns a hunt for smuggled drugs in San Francisco. Not a frame is wasted—the remarkable pre-credit scene at the Embarcadero, for instance, flashes through 17 setups in 50 seconds. Even more impressive is the climax—the most whiz-bang car chase sequence in American movies. And the superb location shooting makes it one of the great San Francisco movie.
