UNCANNY CREATIVITY

Nonperishables like you've never seen them before

Canned food is good for more than just your 2 a.m. cravings for Spam sandwiches. Thanks to Canstruction, cans also put a serious dent in the fight against hunger, especially during the holidays. For 16 years, New Yorkers have been wowed by feats of nonperishable construction during the event, an annual competition between dozens of architectural and engineering firms in the city. Each group creates a sculpture using nothing but cans of food, which are then donated to City Harvest for emergency feeding programs. Last year, Canstruction contributed 160,000 cans—adding up to 266,728 pounds of food—to the City Harvest food drive. Anyone can stop by the World Financial Center to admire the sculptures, which in the past have included Kermit the Frog and a strand of DNA. Bring canned food to donate, but have a heart: Leave the Spam at home.
