Flemish director Ivo van Hove dumped V8 juice on Elizabeth Marvel when she starred as the title character in Hedda Gabler and covered Bill Camp in potato chips, ketchup, watermelon, and chocolate syrup in Molière's The Misanthrope. So one can only wonder what's in store for the players of van Hove's company, Toneelgroep Amsterdam, when they take on his radical reinterpretation of John Cassavetes's 1977 film Opening Night. Van Hove's adaptation of Cassavetes's award-winning classic, about an aging actress who confronts her own mortality after the sudden death of a young fan, features a performance with simultaneous live video on large overhead screens to capture the offstage action and heighten the drama of this play-within-a-play. Performed in Dutch with English subtitles. And mark your calendars: On December 6 at 4:30 p.m., Ivo van Hove discusses art and the creative process with the playwright Charles L. Mee.
