This is no ordinary literary reading. Not, at least, when the performers are graphic novelists Jonathan Ames, Dean Haspiel, Tom Hart, Sarah Glidden, and Matt Thurber, presenting at Graphic Novelists Night at the KGB Bar. Audience members will not only view the illustrations while hearing the novelists read, but also experience a diverse look at the graphic-novel world: Matt Thurber presents his psychedelic work, 1-800-MICE, for example, while literary extraordinaire Ames—famous for his one-man show, Oedipussy, and for his tales of sexual misadventures as a columnist for the New York Press—reads from the much darker piece The Alcoholic, illustrated by Haspiel. KGB's fiction curator, Suzanne Dottino, describes how the graphic novelists introduce conventional-fiction fans to a completely different world: "It's a lot of fun because the graphic novelists remind me of jazz musicians," she says. "They write each other into their own work."
