Fraulein Maria

Similar to how Baz Luhrmann gave his 1996 film, Romeo and Juliet, a modern edge without compromising Shakespeare’s poetic language, choreographer Doug Elkins has done the same with The Sound of Music in his Bessie Award–winning work, Fraulein Maria. This raucous urban version of the beloved musical, making its return in the DancemOpolitan ’O8 Holiday series, features hip-hip and comedy while keeping the original Rodgers & Hammerstein score intact. With a cast that includes both Arthur Aviles and Meghan Merrill in the role of Maria, it’s kind of like getting two Julie Andrews classics (The Sound of Music and Victor/Victoria) for the price of one.
