In 1964, Tom Wolfe followed author Ken Kesey & the Merry Pranksters, a far-out band of hippie hangers-on and friends, on one long, strange acid trip from California to the World’s Fair in New York, and wrote one of the greatest works of literary nonfiction, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Tonight, the man in white himself will be on hand to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the book (which will soon be a movie directed by Gus Van Sant) at the Symphony Space. Author Rick Moody chats with Wolfe about the hallucinogenic orgies, the characters they encountered along the way (Jerry Garcia, Timothy Leary, the Hells Angels), and the experience of traveling in Kesey’s DayGlo-colored school bus, Furthur, with Neal Cassady behind the wheel. Tony Award–winning actor René Auberjonois performs an excerpt from the book.
