ROBO PARTY DON'T STOP
Idle Warship redefines the classic power trio
Brooklyn rhyme king Talib Kweli is a well-known entity around these parts, but it's the intriguing presence of two independent rockin' sistas in this supergroup that makes this evening's prospects exciting. Philly soul gal Res—a/k/a Shareese Renée Ballard—came up through that city's black boho Black Lily scene in the late '90s, and made a splash on the streets (if not the marketplace) with her fine 2001 debut, How I Do. Though she struggled to capitalize on the cultural impact of her paradigm-shifting single/clip "They Say Vision," Res recently released Black.Girls.Rock on her MySpace page. Joining the pair in struggle is Afro-Canadian émigré Graph Nobel, a fiery punkette whose as-yet-little-heard contributions make this rap-rock trio a very promising addition to the black-rock renaissance. Idle Warship's punning moniker may scan as metal, but, considering Party Robot's tracks, their sonic alchemy is uncut future funk. With BLU & Exile.
