The golden age of Hollywood wouldn't be the same without the slapstick hilarity and witty talent of Preston Sturges, who wrote for Paramount in the 1940s before turning to the director's seat. Film Forum presents a nine-day festival of Essential Sturges, a screening of 10 of his master works, which includes today's double feature of Christmas in July (1940)—a comedy-satire on capitalism during the Depression, starring Ernest Truex and William Demarest—and Remember the Night(1940)—a romantic comedy about a lawyer (Fred MacMurray) who brings a convicted shoplifter (Barbara Stanwyck) home for Christmas. And in this day and age, who doesn't need a few good laughs?
