SPIRITED AWAY

MOMA celebrates the centenaries of David Lean and Rex Harrison

If you accidentally summoned your dead first wife from the grave via a seance, making your new wife incredibly jealous, what would you do? Such is Rex Harrison’s predicament as Charles Condomine in David Lean’s 1945 British comedy Blithe Spirit. As a celebration of both Harrison and Lean’s 100th birthdays, MOMA is screening this delightful classic, adapted from Noel Coward’s play, in a newly restored 35mm color print. Kay Hammond plays Elvira, the ghostly first wife who tries to win her husband back, while Constance Cummings stars as second (living) wife Ruth, whose jealousy and irritability skyrocket as she spies her rival’s supernatural advances. “ ’Til death do us part” just doesn’t apply here.
