Blintzes, kugel, tzimmes, shav, kreplach—the Catskills resorts of old didn’t skimp on hearty, unlimited fare. And Richard Greenberg’s underrated 1990 play, The American Plan, set in a Borscht Belt lodge circa 1960, offers a similarly abundant, if rather astringent, repast. In Greenberg’s play, now making its Broadway debut, buffets, tennis courts, and mountain views create a mordant backdrop for a series of unhappy love affairs and stunted desires. Greenberg offers a group of characters—played by Lily Rabe, Mercedes Ruehl, Austin Lysy, Benjamin Eakeley, and Brenda Pressley—who can’t, or won’t, conform to social expectations, with melancholy results. David Grindley, late of Journey’s End, directs the Manhattan Theater Club production.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 2 p.m.; First Tuesday, Sunday of every month, 7 p.m. Starts: Jan. 2. Continues through March 15, 2009
