In the past several years, New York’s been inundated with versions of Henrik Ibsen’s 1890 Hedda Gabler, a play Max Beerbohm described as “a spectacle of life from which we retire with shock.” Hedda’s returned to shock us again, this time in the trim figure of Mary-Louise Parker. Known lately for her work on Weeds, Parker turns from mood-altering substances to mind-altering prose in the role of one of the original desperate housewives. Playwright Christopher Shinn proffers a new adaptation, directed by Ian Rickson (whose celebrated Seagull recently closed). The Roundabout’s redoubtable cast also includes Michael Cerveris, Paul Sparks, and the terrifying Peter Stormare.
