If Saturday Night Live’s Digital Shorts and FunnyOrDie.com have helped revive the short comedy film, way (way) before the Internet era, comedy shorts were the domain of filmmakers like Stan Laurel, Del Lord, and Len Power. Silent but Deadly: An Evening of Comedy Shorts, presented by PopRally, takes a look at three films by those directors and is hosted by comedian Max Silvestri (of Sound Fix fame) with MOMA’s film pianist, Ben Model. The evening also explores new short works by Nick Kroll, Joe Mande, Gabe & Jenny, and ThunderAnt (Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein), among others. And don’t assume that films from the ‘20s were less outrageous: A cross-dressing detective and monkeys acting out fights can hold their own against, say, a dick in a box.
